FAIRFIELD, Iowa – March 11, 2020 – Construction work on U.S. 63 just south of Ottumwa from River Road/Wapello County Road J-12 to the junction of U.S. 34 junction (roundabout) will require closing the southbound and northbound lanes to traffic at 7 a.m. Monday, March 23, until late Fall 2020, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Chariton Construction Office.
The project includes the grading and paving of a new four-lane divided highway from River Road/Wapello County Road J-12 to U.S. 34. The existing bridge over a drainage ditch will be also be replaced with a new bridge, and the existing bridge over a bike trail will be replaced with a reinforced box culvert.
During the road closure, motorists will be directed around the work zone using one of the following signed detour routes (see map). Through traffic will be directed onto an official two-mile marked detour route using River Road/County Road J-12 (east and west), Madison Avenue (south and north), and Vine Street. Lighted signs will be in place along state highway routes to alert motorists of the pending road closure.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
