This Week at NCDOT: Winter Weather Prep and My NCDMV by
RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the Department’s weekly newscast. Winter Weather Prep As the temperature starts to drop in North Carolina, our maintenance crews around the state are checking supplies and inspecting equipment to prepare for potential weather storms. NCDOT workers in Buncombe County performed a dry run already where crews familiarized themselves with snow routes and tested all equipment to ensure it is functioning properly. All 100 North Carolina counties will conduct these drills to be ready for winter weather. “Maintenance yards are running through their dry runs, working with their contractors and should be done in November in terms of preparing all their equipment and topping off salt storage and brine capacities,” said Joshua Kellen, Disaster Recovery Engineer in State Maintenance Operations. With more than 80,000 miles of roadways to maintain, NCDOT has many pieces of equipment, including: 2,250 dump trucks with plows and salt or sand spreaders; 503 front-end loaders and backhoes; and 324 motor graders During these drills, crews also assess the supply of salt and sand which are essential during snow and ice removal. The department can store up to 170,000 tons of salt and sand, and more than 1.5 million gallons of brine at its maintenance facilities across the state. It also has equipment to make brine, a salt water mixture that helps keep snow and ice from freezing on major highways, in each of the state’s 100 counties.
