RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the Department’s weekly newscast. Wings of Freedom Tour Recently, members of the public had an opportunity to view and explore some unique treasures of aviation history. In partnership with the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation hosted the Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom tour from Oct. 19-22. More than 11,000 attendees visited, explored and learned more about World War II era bombers and fighter planes such as the B-17 Flying Fortress, P-51D Mustang and the last still-flying Consolidated B-24 Liberator. Some visitors were even able to take flights on board the rare planes. The event was part of a nationwide tour visiting hundreds of airports to honor those who built, maintained and risked their lives to fly the aircraft for our country. Tips for Driving in the Dark With Daylight Saving Time approaching, and trick-or-treaters out and about on Halloween, it’s important to remember some advice that can keep you and others safe as it becomes darker earlier. Drivers should remember to: Slow down and remove sunglasses at dusk; Adjust the rearview mirror to the night setting to avoid headlight glare; and Look for pedestrians, bicyclists and deer along the roadway   Pedestrians need to: Avoid jaywalking and crossing between vehicles; Walk facing traffic to see oncoming vehicles; and Wear brightly colored clothing so drivers can see them Charlotte Santa Train And lastly, with the holiday season around the corner, those in the Charlotte area can still get tickets for NC By Train’s popular Santa Train. It will run from Charlotte to High Point on Saturday, Dec. 2. Families can get on board and enjoy an afternoon with Mrs. Claus, carolers and Santa Claus himself.
