This Week at NCDOT: Child Passenger Safety and Accident Reconstruction with Drones by
RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the Department’s weekly newscast. Gov. Cooper Declares Child Passenger Safety Week Governor Roy Cooper declared Sept. 18-24 Child Passenger Safety Week. On Monday, a new education and enforcement campaign kicked off in Greensboro. Every 33 seconds, a child under the age of 13 is involved in a vehicle crash in the United States, and car accidents are a leading cause of death for children under 13. Many of those deaths and injuries could be prevented with the proper use of child seats, boosters and seat belts. This week, State Troopers and child safety advocates emphasized the proper use of those safety features. Saturday, Sept. 23 marks Child Passenger Safety Day and Seat Check Saturday with events being held across the state. Drones Offer Advancements in Accident Reconstruction New advancements in drone technology could help get traffic moving faster after highway accidents. NCDOT’s Aviation Division, along with the Highway Patrol and the photogrammetry unit, are looking into the possibility of using drones to reconstruct accident scenes. Currently, accident investigations can be time consuming and cause road closures, but a recent demonstration in Buncombe County showed that using drones to reconstruct a collision could clear an accident scene more than an hour faster than traditional methods while also being safer for emergency responders and less expensive. Walk to School Day Oct. 4 NCDOT is preparing for National Walk to School Day coming up Oct.4. Anyone who’s interested in participating can register their school at walkbiketoschool.org. (NCDOT)
