NCDOT Crews Monitoring Winter Weather Conditions by
RALEIGH – N.C. Department of Transportation crews are monitoring and responding to winter weather across affected parts of the state. In response to recent winter weather and in advance of Monday’s, maintenance crews over the weekend spread more than 2.3 million gallons of a salt-water mixture called brine along state-maintained roadways and highway routes. Real-time travel information Brine is a 23 percent salt-and-water solution that helps prevent ice from bonding to the pavement. Crews across the state were also brought in Sunday night and early Monday morning to monitor bridges and other known trouble spots for icy conditions. Because of the dangerous conditions of roadways, drivers should stay off the roads, if possible, until at least temperatures climb above freezing and roadway conditions improve. Those who must drive should: Reduce speed and leave plenty of room between their vehicles and others. Plan for significant additional travel time to reach their destinations. Approach bridges and overpasses with extreme caution, and, unless necessary, avoid applying their brakes while on a bridge or ramp. If they begin to slide, take their foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide. Do not apply the brakes as that will cause further loss of control of your vehicle. Come to a complete stop or yield the right of way when approaching an intersection in case any vehicles coming from other directions lose control of their vehicles while also trying to stop.
