FAIRFIELD, Iowa – Nov. 20, 2020 – The much-anticipated new four-lane divided highway on U.S. 63 just south of Ottumwa from River Road/Wapello County Road J-12 to the junction of U.S. 34 (roundabout) is scheduled to open early December, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Chariton construction office.
The reconstruction work of this section of U.S. 63 modernizes the highway system and improves mobility and safety. Portions of the project that are complete include the mainline, shoulders, bridges and trail box culvert. Paint stripping and installation of streetlights will be completed in the coming weeks to allow the roadway to open to traffic. The bike path is also being completed at the same time.
Peterson Contractors is working aggressively to meet the intended scheduled opening date. We continue to appreciate your patience and apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
