HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies Oahu motorists that the onramps from Makakilo Drive in both directions onto the eastbound H-1 Freeway will be closed nightly, beginning on Monday night, March 30, 2020, through Friday morning, April 3, 2020, from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., for repaving and loop detector work. For roadwork details and detour routes, please see below.

The onramp from the southbound lanes on Makakilo Drive to the eastbound H-1 Freeway will be closed on Monday night, through Tuesday morning, with a contingency of Tuesday night work scheduled in case of rains. During this time, the southbound lanes on Makakilo Drive will be closed between the H-1 Freeway and Farrington Highway, and traffic will be maintained in both directions by a contraflow in the northbound lanes. Motorists traveling in the inbound direction are advised to continue on Makakilo Drive, take a right onto Farrington Highway, a right onto Wakea Street, and enter the eastbound H-1 Freeway by the Wakea Street onramp. The Fort Barrette Road/Makakilo Drive Road Improvements project is anticipated to be completed by May 2020, weather permitting.

HDOT advises motorists to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time to get to their destinations. Electronic message boards will be in place to notify motorists of the closures and detours. Special Duty Police Officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. Emergency vehicles, first responders, and TheBus have been notified and will not be allowed access to the onramps.
