AMES, Iowa – April 16, 2019 – The Iowa Department of Transportation has added enhancements to its traveler information maps on https://hb.511ia.org/ as well as Iowa’s 511 app, to indicate closed roadways in red.
The change was sparked by the unprecedented flooding in Southwest Iowa but will be applied to any closed road on the state, U.S., and interstate systems. The new feature is available if you click “Incidents” on the left-hand navigation to see roads closed due to unplanned events or “Construction” to see planned construction-related road closures. You may need to zoom into an area to see the red lines indicating a closed roadway.
In addition, an extra 13 cameras have been added to the 511 website in Southwest Iowa. The new temporary camera locations, shown on the map below, have been added to help travelers view the current flooding conditions along impacted roadways.
Cameras on closed roads may occasionally show some truck traffic. The roads are being used sparingly by construction vehicles working to get the roads reopened as quickly as possible. Roadways are not safe for through traffic and travelers should not follow construction vehicles onto closed roads. For your own safety and for the safety of those working on the roads, please obey posted signs and barriers.
