Highway workers do their jobs in hazardous traffic conditions and tragedy can strike in an instant.
When it does, Arizona Department of Transportation employees mourn the loss along with the worker’s family and friends.
The agency honors fallen employees at a sundial memorial in the Sunset Point Rest Area on Interstate 17 north of Black Canyon City. The monument is dedicated to the employees of ADOT who died while serving the citizens of Arizona.
Thirty names are on the sundial memorial, which was dedicated in 1997.
The name of Robert Danzo, who died recently at a Tempe maintenance yard will, soon be added to the memorial.
The memorial reads: “As the sun sets over our fallen companions, may they always be remembered.”
