This Week at NCDOT: Distracted Driving Awareness and New Board of Transportation Members by
RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast. The number of crashes caused by distracted driving is on the rise. Last year in North Carolina, more than 26,000 people were injured and 177 were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver. Governor Cooper recently declared April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Distracted Driving Awareness Distracted drivers are not only a danger to themselves, but also to everyone else on the road. Our goal at NCDOT is to save lives by getting drivers to remember that One Text or Call Could Wreck It All. “Distracted driving is a serious issue in our state,” said David Howard, NCDOT Chief Deputy Secretary. “It will take a concerted effort on all fronts to help address it, especially as technology continues to evolve and drivers face more and more distractions behind the wheel. Governor Cooper has proclaimed April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month to help bring attention to the many dangers of distracted driving.” The safety of everyone who uses our transportation system is NCDOT’s top priority. New Members Join the Board of Transportation The North Carolina Board of Transportation welcomed a new member this month. Grady Hunt of Robeson County is an attorney and a long-time community leader. He was sworn in at the board’s April meeting. Governor Cooper also nominated two others for the board, Billy Clarke of Buncombe County and Allen Moran of Dare County. Hunt joins the nine new board members sworn in last month. To learn more about the N.C.
