This Week at NCDOT: Work Zone Safety Awareness and Lifesavers Conference by
RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast. Work Zone Safety Awareness Governor Roy Cooper has declared April as Work Zone Safety Awareness Month, and April 3rd through 7th as Work Zone Safety Awareness Week. In 2016, there were more than 5,000 crashes in work zones in North Carolina, resulting in over 3,000 injuries and 26 deaths. “The overall goal of Work Zone Awareness Week and Month is to draw attention so we can lessen the number of crashes we have,” said Don Nail, Governor’s Highway Safety Program Director. “What we’re trying to do is draw attention to being safe in work zones and making sure folks can be ready for anything that could occur.” Your safety is our top priority at NCDOT. We ask you to “Drive Smart. Do Your Part” when driving in a work zone with these tips to help keep you and others safe: Stay alert Don’t speed Watch and obey the signs Don’t drive while distracted Watch out for road debris Don’t change lanes in a work zone Be patient We encourage you to show your support for Work Zone Safety by wearing orange on April 5th for “Go Orange Day.” This is part of a national effort to show support for the roadway safety industry, especially the families of victims who have lost their lives in work zones. To learn more about Work Zone Safety, visit ncdot.gov/programs/WorkZoneSafety 2017 Lifesavers Conference Reducing roadway deaths and injuries was on the agenda during the 2017 Lifesavers Conference in Charlotte this week. The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program was chosen to host the country’s largest meeting of highway safety professionals. The three-day conference educated attendees on best practices, new initiatives and safety technology aimed at reducing roadway crashes and fatalities. North Carolina is a Vision Zero state, which means we consider even one fatality or serious injury on our roadways too many.
