Department of Safety & Homeland Security to Hold Special Saturday Hours to Issue Voter Photo Identification
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security today announced that it will open eight of its driver service centers on the first Saturday of October and November to give citizens additional opportunities to obtain photo identification in order to vote in the upcoming state and federal general election. The centers were chosen based on the size of the populations they serve and the response from citizens to centers that were opened on Saturdays before the primary election. A new state law effective this year requires citizens to present a federal or state-issued photo ID to vote at the polls. Department of Safety & Homeland Security Announces Results of Labor Day “No Refusal” DUI Enforcement Effort
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security announced Tuesday that the Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated zero alcohol-related fatal accidents in the 16 counties chosen for “No Refusal” DUI enforcement efforts over the Labor Day holiday period. Additionally, just one DUI suspect detained by the THP refused to take a blood alcohol level test in these enforcement counties and one search warrant was obtained for a blood sample under the new “No Refusal” law. Department of Safety & Homeland Security Announce “No Refusal” Enforcement during Labor Day
NASHVILLE— Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons and Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Tracy Trott today announced the department’s second “No Refusal” enforcement campaign at a joint press conference with the Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in Nashville. The “No Refusal” enforcement effort, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 31 and concluding at midnight on Monday, September 3, will also coincide with the Labor Day holiday weekend. “No Refusal” is the latest enforcement strategy aimed at deterring impaired driving and reducing fatal crashes on Tennessee roadways. The Tennessee Law Enforcement Accreditation (TLEA) Program governing board has awarded the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security state accreditation. The department is the first state agency in Tennessee to earn both state accreditation and national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). It is also one of the few state police or highway patrol agencies in the country with both state and national accreditation. Accreditation is the certification by an independent reviewing authority that an entity has met specific requirements and prescribed standards. Department of Safety & Homeland Security Uses iPad Technology for Faster Driver License Renewals
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is using Apple iPad technology in its state driver service centers to help improve wait times for customers who need to renew or replace driver licenses. The department has installed 72 iPad kiosks, called ASSETS (automatic self-service electronic terminals), inside 26 driver service centers across Tennessee, primarily located in the state’s urban areas. Customers who visit specified driver service centers to simply renew or replace a lost driver license may use a special application installed on the iPads to quickly complete and pay for the transaction using a credit or debit card. Chief Mark Foulks Appointed to Homeland Security Council
NASHVILLE — Greeneville Fire Chief Mark Foulks has been appointed to the state’s Homeland Security Council by Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam. The Council was created by Executive Order 8 to work with the Office of Homeland Security in planning and directing statewide homeland security activities and to interact with federal and local officials in promoting homeland security. Since September 2006, Foulks has served as fire chief in Greeneville, Tenn. During his tenure, he restored the multi-agency, county-wide hazardous materials team to operational capabilities. Foulks is also a member of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High Explosives (CBRNE) committee for District 1 Homeland Security and is a District Coordinator for the Tennessee Fire Service Mutual Aid System. Department of Safety & Homeland Security, Donate Life Partner to Promote Organ Donation
NASHVILLE — Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Driver Service Center employees across the state will begin sporting special blue “Donate Life” tee shirts each Friday throughout the summer to encourage customers to register for organ donation. This program is sponsored by Donate Life Tennessee. Tennesseans can register to become an organ donor by simply Checking YES when applying for, or renewing their driver’s license. A red heart is placed on the driver license, signifying them as an organ donor. As of June 1, over 1.7 million (1,725,718) Tennesseans have signed up through the department’s Driver Service Centers or the online Donate Life Tennessee Registry.
