Tennessee Highway Patrol Encourages Back to School Safety

NASHVILLE—The Tennessee Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to take extra traffic safety precautions as students return to school around the state. State Troopers will target traffic violators, specifically those who speed in school zones and pass stopped school buses, as well as raise awareness on school safety in Tennessee.   “Every motorist should exercise extreme caution and safely share the road with school buses, pedestrians and bicyclists, especially around the school zones. Our goal is to protect children traveling to and from school and prosecute motorists who disregard the law. We are asking everyone to do their part in making this a safe school year,” Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons said.   In 2011, State Troopers issued 3,856 citations in school zones. Tennessee Highway Patrol Checkpoint Leads to Arrest of Fugitive, Seizure of Meth-Making Supplies

NASHVILLE — Tennessee state troopers today arrested two Florida men after they discovered one was a fugitive from justice and evidence of methamphetamine making supplies during a driver license checkpoint in Rhea County.   Lieutenant Daniel Ruskey and Trooper Pat Patterson stopped a pick-up truck during the scheduled checkpoint on State Hwy 68 at Shut In Gap Road. The troopers then determined the driver, Richard Williams, 38, was driving on a suspended license. Further investigation revealed the passenger, James Sparks, 33, was wanted by Bay County, Fla. officials for a probation violation.   After placing both subjects into custody, the troopers searched the vehicle and found several components used in the process of making methamphetamine. Tennessee Highway Patrol Accepting Applications for Citizens’ Trooper Academy

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Highway Patrol is now accepting applications for the fall session of its Citizens’ Trooper Academy. The first session is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 10, 2012. Sessions will run from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. weekly. The 10-week academy, which consists of approximately 30 hours of training, is designed to develop a better understanding and awareness of the Tennessee Highway Patrol as well as its parent agency, the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, in the community through a hands-on approach. Topics covered include investigations, patrol, homeland security and many other areas of the patrol.   Participants must be at least 21 years old, available to attend weekly three-hour sessions with no more than one absence, sign required waivers and agreements and have no criminal history.   Applications are available … Read entire article »

Tennessee Highway Patrol Releases Bonnaroo Enforcement Results

NASHVILLE — Preliminary figures from the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Chattanooga District indicate that State Troopers investigated 29 traffic crashes with zero fatalities during the 2012 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Coffee County from Wednesday, June 6 through Monday, June 11. Logging over 7,200 man-hours over six days, State troopers worked around-the-clock to ensure festival-goers had a safe Bonnaroo experience. Of the 29 crashes investigated by the THP, there were nine injury wrecks and 20 property damage crashes. “Every state trooper assigned to Bonnaroo knew that the collective goal was to have one of the safest Bonnaroo festivals ever,” THP Colonel Tracy Trott said. “They gave 100 percent for six-days to ensure that traffic was moving and motorists were obeying the law. Tennessee Highway Patrol Graduates 44 New State Troopers

NASHVILLE — Governor Bill Haslam joined the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security in welcoming 44 State Troopers to the Highway Patrol on Friday morning.  Trooper Cadet Class 512 took their oath of office in a graduation ceremony at Tulip Grove Baptist Church in Old Hickory. Members of Cadet Class 512 have spent the past 18 weeks undergoing extensive law enforcement instruction at the department’s Training Center.  The more than 890 hours of classroom training included criminal and constitutional law, patrol procedures, professional ethical conduct, crash investigation and firearms.  The new graduates will now advance to a maximum of 12 weeks of field training.     “The Tennessee Highway Patrol Troopers’ Creed says ‘Many are called, but few are chosen’,” Gov.
